7 skin goals to make now

With the turn of a new year comes a collective of updated plans and practices to live life a little better than last year. Along with the usual mindfulness and mantras for success and self-elevation, MISS FRANC asks you save some goal setting for skin in 2022.

Not sure where to start? We’ve rounded up our ‘Top 7 New Year’s Skin Resolutions’ for a quick and easy pivot towards your most healthy, luminous glow yet.

  1. SUNSCREEN: Long time followers of MISS FRANC know this is Francine’s non-negotiable when it comes to any skin routine. Multiple applications of SPF 50+ everyday, 365 times days a year.
  2. SIMPLIFICATION: “A common misconception is over-masking and over-peeling for glowing skin. Too much of anything is never a good thing, and over application of ingredients can disrupt the skin barrier and heighten sensitivities,” says Francine. The most effective routine is a simple one, with well thought-out active ingredients suited to your skin type.
  3. RETINOIDS: The warriors against early signs of ageing, acne and hyperpigmentation, it’s important to persist with retinoids despite initial irritation or redness. MISS FRANC’s favourite? Medik8’s Crystal Retinal. Start twice-weekly and build from there.
  4. INSIDE-OUT: Brightly coloured fruits and vegetables are known to work in the deeper layers of skin to protect collagen from ultraviolet light and damage from environmental factors, such as pollution. The darker your fruit and veg, the richer in antioxidants. Oily fish, flaxseed oil, cashew nuts … and water! There’s no beating increased H20 for added glow.
  5. VITAMIN C: Yet to incorporate Vitamin C into your skin routine? Now’s the time. “Suitable for every skin type, it’s a potent antioxidant and works perfectly layered under your morning SPF,” says Francine.
  6. KEEP IT CONSISTENT: “Don’t be tempted by the plethora of well packaged products boasting endless benefits. Skin loves consistency, and will reward you for a well-considered, simple routine,” says Francine. “For most of my patients, it’s a twice-daily cleanse (double cleanse for makeup wearers), followed by Vitamin C and SPF in the morning, and then a Vitamin B, retinol (skin type depending) and moisturiser at night. Of course, this will differ for my sensitive and acneic clients.”
  7. KNOW YOUR LEVELS: “Given we are all exposed to this fast-spreading virus, it’s important to understand what you may be lacking. Get a blood test from an integrative GP and respond accordingly with supplements such as Vitamin D, C, Zinc and Magnesium (all extremely important right now),” Francine suggests.
